1666

I’ve been listening to the Diary of Samuel Pepys, specifically the few days after the fire began in September 1666.

It’s interesting that laws had been passed around construction and home building, only to protect people, but it was all ignored and this would have undoubtably helped the fire to spread.

I wonder how many people died or went missing without anybody knowing for sure what had happened to them. The displacement of a natural disaster or something like this in our current age and the recovery of people and reconnection is helped incredibly by social media, the Internet and technology in general.

I’m also interested that the initial reaction of a lot of people is that it must be the French or the Dutch or somebody. That it must be a malicious plot rather than an unfortunately accident.
