On our walk yesterday Sparky caught and killed a rabbit in front of me. He was surprisingly efficient for a usually lolloping hound. 

I told my dad and his response was quoting Tennyson –

 ‘Nature, Red in tooth and claw.‘ 

I don’t know when I learnt the phrase but I’ve always liked it. I wanted the official definition and I couldn’t have explained it so eloquently – involving savage or merciless conflict or competition.
